Hell’s Smoke and Burning Wood
Allah, the Most High said:
“And the companions of the left—what are the companions of the left? [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water. And a shade of black smoke. Neither cool nor beneficial.” (Al-Waqiah (56): 41-44)
Qatadah said: ‘These verses contain three things that bring coolness to man; water, wind and shade.’
In Hell, the cooling properties of these three are removed and replaced with heat, may Allah protect us from it through His Mercy and Compassion. Allah also said:
“Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns.” (Al-Mursalat (77): 30)
Mujahid said: ‘It is the smoke of Hell bellowing from the green, black and yellow firewood that shoots flames if ignited.’
“Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress. As if they were yellowish [black] camels. “ (Al-Mursalat (77): 32-33)
Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu ‘anhuma) explained that “Jimalatun Surf” also means bits of copper. Allah said:
“There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves. “ (Al-Rahman (55): 35)
Mujahid read this verse and put his head into his clothes. He wept and then emerged saying, ‘It is the flame of fire.’ He could not complete the hadith.
Nasa’i and Tirmidhi report the narration of Abu Hurayrah (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “The dust from striving in the path of Allah and the smoke of Hell will never come together in a man’s stomach. “ (Al-Nasa’i, 6/12 and Tirmidhi, #1633)
