WARNINGS AGAINST THE FIRE
Warnings Against The Fire
Allah, Most High, says,
“O you who have believed! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but [always] do what they are commanded.” (Al-Tahrim(66): 6)
Allah, Most High, says,
“Then fear the Fire, whose fuelis men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.” (Al-Baqarah (2): 24)
Allah, Most High,says,
“And fear the Fire, which is prepared for the disbelievers.” (Al-`Imran (3): 131)
Allah, Most High,says,
“So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.” (Al-Layl (92): 14)
Allah, Most High, says,
“They will have coverings [layers] of fire above them and coverings [of Fire] beneath them. By that Allah threatens [and warns] His servants.‘O My servants, therefore fear Me!’” (Al-Zumar(39): 16)
Allah, Most High, says,
“For We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say,‘What does Allah intend by this as an example?’Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. Ajid it [mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity. No!By the moon. And [by] the night when it departs. And [by] the morning when it brightens. Indeed, it [the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions]. As a warning to humanity—To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.” (Al-Muddathir (74): 31-37)
Al-Hasan said regarding the words, “warning to humanity “: ‘By Allah, man has not been warned from something more severe than this.’ (Ibn Abi Hatim in his Tafsir.)
Qatadah said that the verse,‘“Indeed, it is of the greatest affliction” refers to Hellfire.’
Samak Ibn Harb narrated that he heard Numan Ibn Bashir (radiyAllahu `anhu) giving a sermon saying, ‘1 heard the Prophet (pbuh) say, “I warn you against the Hellfire, I warn you against the Hellfire so much so that if a man in the market were to hear it, his garment over his shoulder would drop to his feet.” (Imam Ahmad in his Musnad, 4/268 and 272.)
‘Adi Ibn Hatim (radijAllahu `anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “Save yourself from fire.” And then he said: ‘Save yourself from the Fire’ three times such that we thought he was seeing the Hellfire itself; and then he added, “Fear the fire even by (giving in charity) a portion of a date, and whosoever does not have that then let him say a word of goodness. “ (Bukhari, #1413 and Muslim, #1016.)
In the hadlth reported by Bukhari and Muslim, narrated on the authority Abu Hurayrah (radiyAllahu `anhu) that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Verily the example of me and you is like a man who kindles a fire wherein insects and moths dive into it and [similarly] I try to restrain you from the Hellfire while you plunge headlong into it” ( Bukhari, #3426 and Muslim, #2284. )
It was reported by Bazaar and Tabaram from the narration of Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu ‘anhuma) that the Prophet(pbuh) said: “ I am a restrainer so fear the fire, so fear the fire. Fear (approaching) its boundaries for if I die,I will precede you to the Hawd. (Al-Hawd, the water cistern/ lake that will be for the Prophet(pbuh) on earth. Whoever drinks from it will never feel thirsty again. It’s utensils are as the number of the stars; its water is from Al-Kawthar in Paradise that is sent down to it) Whoever arrives there has indeed triumphed. Then a group will be brought forth but diverted towards the left. I will say “O my Lord! They are my people.” Allah will say, “They treaded a path of apostasy after your demise. “ (Ahmad,Tabarani in al-Kabir and Bazzar)
Imam Muslim records in his Sahlh on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) that he said: ‘When the following verse was revealed:
“And warn, [O Muhammd], your closest kindred” (Al-Shu’ara (26): 214)
The Prophet(pbuh); gathered the people of Quraysh together and said: “O the tribe of Ka’b Ibn Luayy protect yourselves from the Hellfire, O the tribe of Marah Ibn Ka‘b protect yourselves from the Hellfire, O the tribe of ‘Abdul Shams protect yourselves from the Hellfire,O the tribe of ‘Abdu’l-Manaf protect yourselves from the Hellfire, O the tribe of Hashim protect yourselves from the Hellfire, O the tribe of ‘Abdu’l-Muttalib protect yourselves from the Hellfire, O Fatimah bint Muhammad protect yourself from the Hellfire for indeed I have nothing [to protect you] from [the punishment of] Allah. (Muslim, #204)
TabaranI reported on the authority of Kulayb Ibn Hazn (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) who heard the Prophet(pbuh) say, “Seek Paradise earnestly and flee from the Hellfire earnestly. Verily, neither the seeker of Paradise nor the one who flees from Hellfire, sleeps. The Hereafter is wrapped with detestable things while this world is wrapped with pleasing things and vain desires. Let not the present world distract you from the Hereafter.
Haram Ibn Hayyan (radiyAllahu ‘anhu) used to walk outside some nights and call at the top of his voice: ‘1 am amazed at how one who seeks Paradise can sleep, and at how one who flees from the Hellfire can sleep and then he read the verse:
“Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?”’ (Al-A’raf (7): 97)
Imam Ahmad reported in his Kitab al-Zuhd that Abu Jauza’a said: ‘If I am given any authority over the people, I would erect minarets along the streets and would appoint men to call out to the people: ‘The fire, The fire.’
